Gohyaku Rakan-ji temple


Gohyaku Rakan-ji was established in 1695.

`Rakan`is Buddha's disciples, and the 146 surplus statues of them are exhibited in the first building called `Rakando'.


In the main hall, the exhibition replicates the scene that Buddha is preaching to the Rakan such as `what are good friends and what are good friends.

It has an extraordinary atmosphere by surronded by many statues.





All the wooden statues of Buddha and Rakan was carved by Sho'un Genkei alone in 1691-1710, and they (305 statues) are designated as the Important Cultural Properties of Tokyo.
